Dorset's diverse coastal habitats, estuaries, and open heathlands provide excellent conditions for plovers and lapwings throughout the year. Five species from this charismatic family have been recorded in the county, including the striking Northern Lapwing on farmland and wet meadows, and passage visitors such as the Golden Plover and Grey Plover along the Jurassic Coast and Poole Harbour. The Little Ringed Plover and Ringed Plover can also be found on shingle beaches and gravel margins during the breeding season and on migration.
