Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to find out what bird they saw and read about it, whatever device, browser or assistive technology they use.
What we aim for
We build birdfact.com to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. In practice that means:
- Text and its background have a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1, and no text is smaller than 12 pixels.
- Every button and link is at least 44 pixels tall, so it is easy to tap.
- Everything works with a keyboard, focus is always visible, and a “Skip to content” link starts every page.
- Pages use real headings, lists and tables, so screen readers can move around them.
- Photos are described in their alt text; comparison tables can be read row by row.
- Nothing flashes, and animation is kept to a minimum. If you ask your device to reduce motion, we turn it off.
- You can zoom to 400% without losing content.
What we know falls short
- Some older photos have only a short description. We are writing better ones, starting with the most-visited pages.
- Adverts on articles come from our ad partner and we do not control their content. If an advert gets in your way, tell us where you saw it.
- Some bird recordings have no written description of the sound yet.
Tell us about a problem
If something on the site is hard to use, contact us and say which page and what happened. We read every message.
